More than half of New York City's mayoral candidates have smoked weed in their lifetime, The New York Observer reports. Democrats Christine Quinn, Bill de Blasio, and Bill Thompson all admitted to toking up, as did Republicans Joe Lhota and George McDonald, and Independence Party candidate Adolfo Carrion Jr.
Even though earlier this week John Liu proposed legalizing marijuana in New York City, a plan with which Sal Albanese agrees, neither of the two candidates have ever partaken in the smoking of dank, heady nugs.
Anthony Weiner's campaign didn't respond to the Observer's survey.
So, seeing as there's a strong likelihood our next mayor has smoked pot, where do they all the candidates stand when it comes to reforming marijuana laws?
The Republican candidates actually have relatively progressive stances on the issue. Lhota supports legalization, McDonald supports decriminalization, and John Catsimatidis supports medical marijuana, but not legalization.
As for the Democratic candidates (see slideshow below) they also fall somewhere on the medical marijuana-to-legalization continuum.
Note: New York City is the marijuana arrest capital of the United States, if not the world.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg--although admitting to smoking pot himself and enjoying it-- has called medical marijuana "one of the greatest hoaxes of all time."
Earlier this year, Bloomberg did, however, announce that arrests for small amounts of marijuana in the city would result in a desk appearance ticket, not a night in jail.
