Obama Girl Is Back: SOPA Attack From Leah Kauffman, 'I've Got A Crush On Obama' Writer

WASHINGTON -- The original Obama girl is back.

Leah Kauffman, the singer-songwriter who wrote and recorded the 2007 viral sensation "I Got a Crush... on Obama," has released a new song. Like the "Obama" song, it's a breathy, alt-pop number with a political message. But this time she's going after SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, a controversial bill that supporters say would protect intellectual property online, but opponents say violates the First Amendment.

Kauffman's song is titled "Firewall (Don't Let Our Government Ruin The Internets)," and much of it is a love song dedicated to the Internet itself, with lines like "You do something to me, want to be with you always." She also sings, ostensibly to the Internet, about her fear of a day "S.O.P.A. would try to change you or take you away."

Kauffman may not look familiar to the millions of Americans who know the Obama-themed song, but that's because the viral video starred actress Amber Lee Ettinger, who lip-syched Kauffman's words while splashing around in the ocean. Ettinger quickly became known worldwide as "Obama Girl," while Kauffman told HuffPost she continued to perform the song live throughout 2008.

"Firewall," she told HuffPost, "is about my love for the Internet -- because it's so amazing -- and how these draconian censorship bills could essentially ruin the Internet as we know it."

"With the “Obama Girl” videos we reached hundreds of millions of people," Kauffman said, and although "It’s difficult to determine the impact, it is undeniable that the Internet and online video has an effect on people’s opinions on issues and candidates."

The SOPA bill is currently being marked up in the House Judiciary Committee, and opposition has grown more vocal recently. Last week, a broad coalition of Silicon Valley executives, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and Huffington Post CEO Arianna Huffington signed an open letter to Washington explaining the potential dangers of the bill.
