8th Grader With Down Syndrome Hits 3-Point Shots, Gets On 'Sportscenter'

"Sometimes Twitter is awesome, like tonight," Scott Van Pelt said as he introduced this highlight of Owen Groesser on "Sportscenter" on Wednesday night

Groesser, an eighth grader with Down Syndrome, became a sudden social media star after sinking two three-point shots for a Van Hoosen junior high basketball team in Rochester, Mich. As first reported by WXYZ-7 in Detroit, Groesser had not played all season long before his coach drew up a play for him in the team's final game.

“He’s got a good shot,” Groesser's dad, Chris, told the Detroit Free Press. “I wasn’t shocked but I was definitely thrilled. It was a big day for him.”

After the game, Owen's teammates, classmates and family members started the hashtag #GetOwenOnSportscenter to share his story.

The hashtag got the attention of the folks at ESPN, notably Van Pelt.

A short while later Owen did get on "Sportscenter." Even better, one of his two baskets made the list of Top 10 Plays for the night.
