A woman vacationing from Connecticut died Wednesday after a terrifying parasailing accident off Pompano Beach.
Local Fire Rescue told WSVN the 28-year-old was tandem parasailing beside her husband when her harness broke, sending her plunging to the water below from a height of up to 200 feet.
NBC Miami reports the boat operators quickly reeled in the woman's husband before turning the vessel around to find her facedown in the water in cardiac arrest.
Though staff with Waveblast Watersports reportedly began CPR in the boat and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue employed advanced life support techniques, the woman was pronounced dead at Broward Health North.
Waveblast Watersports had no comment on the incident when reached by CBS Miami, who report the woman's husband was uninjured. Overhead footage showed the double harness laid out on a dock, one side of it missing the straps that wrap around a user's body.
Unfortunately, the woman's death is one of several fatal parasailing incidents over the last few years. A South Carolina man died off Bradenton Beach in June 2011 when the boat suffered engine trouble, sending him into the Gulf of Mexico from a height of 800 feet while his wife watched from below.
And in September of 2011, a 27-year-old Alejandra White of Georgia died after high winds at Clearwater Beach blew her onto shore.
According to the Parasailing Safety Council, there have been 72 fatalities in parasailing since 1982, with roughly 5 million people participating annually. Only 9 of the deaths are blamed on passenger support system failures.
