The special came out last April, just before his wife, Michelle McNamara, died suddenly from a lethal combination of prescription medications and an unknown condition.
During his speech, the comedian seemingly referenced his wife’s death, saying, “This has not been a fun year for me and a lot of people. But I’m going to try to be as goofy and obnoxious as I possibly can.”
Oswalt continued, “It was bitterly ironic being nominated, it’s bittersweet winning. I hope to be able to move beyond the bitterness. All of you, thank you all so much. Thank you.”
The comedian also shared his shock about winning on Twitter, writing, “Good Lord I just won a #Grammy.”
Oswalt has been nominated three times before for Best Comedy Album, though this year’s award marks his first win.
