Stanley Kubrick: A Retrospective
LACMA (Miracle Mile)

Opening day of the first U.S. retrospective of director Stanley Kubrick. Presented by LACMA and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this exhibition covers Kubrick's career, beginning with his early photographs for Look through his directorial works of the 1950s through the 1990s. Films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining are represented through a selection of annotated scripts, production photography, lenses and cameras, set models, costumes, and props. On view through June 30, 2013.

Jasper Johns: Numbers, 0-9, and 5 Postcards and Prints: 2000-2012
Matthew Marks Gallery (West Hollywood)

Opening reception for two exhibitions of works by artist Jasper Johns. Numbers, 0-9, and 5 Postcards features thirteen bronze sculptures, five paintings, and five works on paper completed over the past two years. This is the first exhibition in Johns' career to debut a major body of work in Los Angeles. Recent Prints includes sixteen prints made over the past twelve years. On view through January 5, 2013.

Richard Serra at Gemini G.E.L.'s Workshop
Gemini G.E.L. (West Hollywood)

Gemini G.E.L. opens its workshop to the public for this event. Their master printer will be on site to answer questions and show how Serra's large-scale etching were created. The event is presented in conjunction with the current gallery exhibition featuring etchings including Double Rift 1. RSVP required to rsvp@geminigel.com.

Light My Way, Stranger
Fitzpatrick-Leland House (Hollywood Hills)
7-10 p.m.
Presented by the MAK Center, this benefit auction features a set of unique light fixtures, largely one-of-a-kind, designed specifically for this event by a group of Los Angeles architects and artists. The event features food and music by experimental chamber music collective LA Fog. All proceeds from the auction will go to support the MAK Center. Reservations are $130 and available online.

Mike Kelley: Deodorized Central Mass With Satellites
Perry Rubenstein (Hollywood)
9-11 p.m.
Opening reception for an exhibition of work by late artist Mike Kelley. Deodorized Central Mass With Satellites features a thirteen-part hanging plush sculpture surrounded by geometric wall reliefs, which fill the room with a chemical pine-scent and illustrate the plush toy and household cleaning materials Kelley incorporated in his early works. On view through December 15, 2012.
