'Point Break' Remake Hires Director Ericson Core

Cult Favorite Gets Remake Treatment

Vaya con dios. According to THR, Ericson Core has signed on the direct the remake of "Point Break" that Alcon Entertainment is planning to release in the near future. Core is best known as a cinematographer on films like the original "The Fast and the Furious" and "Daredevil." He also directed the 2006 Mark Wahlberg football drama "Invincible."

Released in 1991, "Point Break" has become a cult classic for action enthusiasts and Keanu Reeves devotees. The original film was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who would go on to become the first woman to ever win Best Director at the Academy Awards for "The Hurt Locker" at the 2010 Academy Awards. In "Point Break," Reeves starred as a young FBI agent named Johnny Utah who was tasked with infiltrating a cabal of surfing bank robbers, led by the mystical Bohdi (Patrick Swayze in perhaps his most Swayze-y role ever). The remake was announced in 2011.

"When Kathryn and I got a chance to work together, I knew she was special," Reeves told HuffPost Entertainment about "Point Break" last year. "I was really lucky to have the chance to work with her. That film was part of changing my life. It's a good, clean, fun movie!"

No casting has been set for this remake of "Point Break," but some have already begun speculating about who would be right for the film. (Hint: Ryan Gosling.)
