The Key To Understanding Pope Francis: All Together Podcast With Father James Martin

Because he's free!

The Pope cometh.

From Tuesday, September 22 to Sunday, September 27, Pope Francis will be visiting the United States and will be addressing the United Nations, President Barack Obama and Congress and celebrating Mass at the World Meeting of the Families in Philadelphia.

But what exactly will Pope Francis say, and how will our highly fractured society receive his message?

On this week’s ALL TOGETHER, I talk all things pope with the Rev. James Martin, S.J., a priest and editor at large at America Magazine. He is the author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage and has a novel coming out in October called The Abby.

Father Martin is also a Jesuit who offered insight into how the vows against ambition made by every Jesuit provides the key to understanding this pope. He also explained that the spirituality of Jesuits requires that they free themselves of anything that separates them from connecting with God. This includes expectations of how things are supposed to be done in the Vatican.

"The Pope is a free man," Rev. Martin tells Raushenbush "The truth has set him free."
