President Barack Obama has officially declared his hottest MCs list for 2016.
The commander in chief called into SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning” to share his thoughts on a number of topics including his current list of favorite rappers.
“I think the young guys ― Kendrick [Lamar] and Chance [the Rapper] are doing amazing work. I love Drake and the girls [Malia and Sasha] love Drake, so he’s commercially just doing great and unbelievably talented,” he said to hosts Sway Calloway and Heather B.
“Jay Z is still the king ― you know, he’s got a track record. The same with Kanye. There’s a lot of talent out there, but what I look at who’s breaking new ground, Kendrick and Chance those guys are doing just amazing work, and they’re wonderful young men.”
The president’s admiration of hometown favorite Chance the Rapper extends beyond music. In an August interview with GQ magazine, the 23-year-old rapper detailed his inspiring meeting with Obama during a April visit to the White House to discuss the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative and criminal justice reform.
Obama went on to share with Sway and Heather B how his personal connection to the Chicago-native dates back to his tenure as a senator in Illinois.
“Chance, I’ve known for years, because his dad was my state director when I was a senator in Illinois,” he said. “So I first met Chance when he was eight years old. And so, we’ve been family for a while.”
