EDX knows his way around a remix. Whether it’s Uruguay by Nora En Pure or Show Me Love by Sam Feldt, the drop comes and the bassline is instantly recognizable, conjuring up images of warm summer nights or an all day beach party. A native of Switzerland but born to Italian parents, EDX (aka Maurizio Colella) spent most holidays in Italy. This where he found a passion for dance music during the heydays of Italo Disco.

His remix of Charlie Puth’s “How Long” molds the track for the dancefloor, keeping the vocal in tact, but adding just enough spice to make you want to bust out some moves. Check the premiere below, as well as our interview with the accomplished dj/producer.

Tell me about the remix. I’m used to working with vocals and building a beat around them. In Charlie Puth’s original interpretation, the vocal was slow and quiet. There wasn’t a lot of music so I was lucky to be able to add the EDX sound. It was like the vocal was made for an EDX track.

And what is the EDX sound? I want people to smile on the dancefloor and be happy. It’s warm, sexy, and groovy with a twist of energy.

How did you discover dance music? I grew up in Switzerland but was always going to Italy for holidays. Dance music - deep house and Italo Disco was on the beaches. It eventually became part of my life/day over the next twenty years. I was one of those people who got to experience the whole subculture from the beginning when it really started to grow.

What is the dance scene like in Switzerland? We started very early. We have the biggest electronic dance parade every year, almost one million people. The scene is very aged. We have a very dedicated market for underground music. We also have four different languages, so music in general is very diverse. When it comes to rock, Switzerland has more rock festivals per capita than any other country.

What are you working on at the moment? I just finished my single Runnin’, and we did a remix contest with Spinnin’ Records for We Can’t Give Up. I'm working on a track for January which will be more of a club track, and of course I’m already working on some tracks for next summer.

Are there any cities you find very special to play in? It’s a blessing to be able to produce your music somewhere on this planet. And because of digital and social media you’re able to share it and also travel. I feel like every country has this special twist. I was last week in Tokyo, and the energy was amazing. In general I would say Central and South America, and Asia - they give music a big value. I’m really excited about my NYE show in Cape Town. The last time I played South Africa the energy was incredible.

What do you look for in a vocal you’re going to work with? I try to have a vocal that is funky and still has some kind of a catchy lyric. Something that is accessible.

What’s something you can’t travel without? Sadly, my phone. My usb. My headphones. The phone is the most important gear because you have music, you have information, and you can reach your friends and family with your phone.

What’s the last book you read? I’m really into documentary and know how - rather than reading a book. This summer I went deep into travel agency systems because I’m traveling a lot and was curious how they work.

Is there a track you really like at the moment? It’s hard to say because I’m part time working on a record label in Switzerland and also doing my radio show

There is a remix by Icarus of Rae Morris’s “Do It.” I like this one, there’s a good energy.
