The most important assets of employees have evolved over the years - from muscles and speed to knowledge and the ability to adapt to rapid changes.

But this is not all. Just as new skills have been required of employees, so too have new challenges been asked of our leaders to provide in return - and it is more than just a paycheck:

Today's work force is seeking meaning in the work we do. It's called purpose.

In demand we are aligning our personal and professional lives with purpose, stoking our own internal desire for the "why" of our work. The corporations who fail to understand, or even dismiss, the new purpose-driven workforce are going the way of the dinosaur.

How did we get here? Why did purpose become so important to us?

We live in a world that for so long has been solely focused on results. Of course, results are still top of mind for many. But hunting for results alone is not enough. We also need to know why we do what we do.

  1. Self-realization is 'the thing' in many parts of the world. We look now to fulfill needs on a higher level. We want meaning. We need a reason to get up in the morning, beyond earning money.

  • Ethical awareness is increasing. We want to dedicate our working efforts for companies that make a difference in the market, in their environment and in the lives of their employees. We are moving into the era of conscious capitalism and the purpose economy. Corporations need to understand these new parameters. Leadership needs to adjust to the new demands.
  • We want to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Together we can tap into unlimited potential. There is a certain potential that becomes available as soon as we come together as a team. It is awesome to be a part of this.
  • Think about a team of football players or musicians in an orchestra. What they can accomplish alone is nothing; what they can accomplish together is incredible!
