Rachel Maddow bid the 112th Congress farewell on her Thursday MSNBC show.

The 113th Congress convened for its first session on Thursday and reelected John Boehner as speaker of the House. Maddow said that Boehner's reelection meant that she will continue researching her "John Boehner is bad at his job hypothesis," an inquiry which has turned itself into a recurring, and particularly entertaining, segment on her show.

She ended her farewell with a moving discussion on the horrific mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., and likened Thursday's convening to Congress' metaphorical first day of school.

"The president says he wants national action to stop gun violence. Can this Congress do it? Today is day one," she said.
