Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) isn’t a fan of fellow Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and his assessment of the president’s attack on the press.
In an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Paul said President Donald Trump was “expressing his opinion” in his “own distinct way” when he called the press the “enemy of the American people.”
McCain criticized Trump’s statement, warning that that’s “how dictators get started.”
Asked, about McCain’s comments, Paul tore into his colleague.
“This is colored by John McCain’s disagreement with President Trump,” Paul said. “Everything that he says about the president is colored by his own personal dispute he has got running with President Trump. And it should be taken with a grain of salt because John McCain is the guy that has advocated for war everywhere.”
McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, is an outspoken defense hawk in Congress, and has been far more aggressive than Paul on the issue of military intervention.
Paul wouldn’t say whether he agreed with the president’s assertion that the press is “the enemy,” instead railing against McCain for his foreign policy positions.
“Actually we’re very lucky John McCain is not in charge because I think we would be in perpetual war,” he said.
