Read This Perfect Poem About Mansplaining, Written Before Twitter Was Around

“He tells her that the earth is flat ― He knows the facts, and that is that.”

October 6 was National Poetry Day in the UK, and to celebrate, iNews editor Felicity Morse posted a brilliant poem that proves mansplaining has existed since before Twitter gave the term mainstream attention.

Morse shared a poem on Twitter written by Wendy Cope and published in 2006 ― the same year Twitter launched ― titled “Differences of Opinion.”

“He tells her that the earth is flat ― He knows the facts, and that is that,” the poem (below) begins.

Morse praised the poem for nailing mansplaining “before Twitter [was] even invented.” (The poem was published in February 2006, and Twitter launched that July.)

Of course, while the poem is a perfect example of how men will doggedly speak over women who are smarter and/or more qualified than them (like a certain GOP candidate), men on the Internet still felt compelled to mansplain the poem to Morse:

Classic. They can disagree with the poem and the existence of mansplaining all they want, but, to quote Cope’s poem: “The planet goes on being round.”
