A Democratic-aligned group is trying a novel approach to get Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's controversial rape remarks into the hands -- and ears -- of voters: It's mailing out talking brochures of the Republican's now-infamous comment that God intended pregnancies from sexual assaults.
The group American Bridge 21st Century tried the idea out two weeks ago against Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who is also running for the Senate and also made notorious rape statements, including that women didn't become pregnant from "legitimate rape."
The group apparently liked the results so much that it's sending Hoosiers a similar mailer that plays a message when opened, much like a musical birthday card.
Only it's an unpleasant message from Mourdock. When the brochure is opened, the recipient hears him say, "Even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended to happen."
The mailer also has him saying some other eyebrow-raising things.
American Bridge is spending only about $30,000 so far on the talking cards, according to the latest federal election reports. But in a year when the airwaves are saturated with ads from outside groups, the cards at least offer a new way to break through the din.
