Rielle Hunter: John Edwards Was 'Gracious' About News Of Pregnancy

Rielle Hunter Reveals John Edwards' Reaction To Contentious Pregnancy News

John Edwards' former mistress Rielle Hunter said she was "surprised" when she learned she was pregnant. The former Democratic presidential hopeful, according to Hunter, had a different reaction.

"[He was] gracious," Hunter said. "He was kinder and more gentle than I thought he would be."

Hunter opened up about her pregnancy and other aspects of her scandalous relationship with Edwards in an interview with ABC's 20/20. When host Chris Cuomo asked if she thought Edwards hinted "don't have this baby, please," Hunter said, "yes and no."

"I think that he thought the timing was terrible," Hunter said.

Though she admitted that she and Edwards never used protection, Hunter said she was still shocked when she found out about her pregnancy.

"I was 43 years old," Hunter said. "I was very surprised."

Hunter also addressed other aspects of the Edwards' controversy in the interview, discussing how she thought she could help the former North Carolina senator, and claiming his marriage with his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth "was ruined before I got there."

Hunter also admitted she "was disgusted with myself for being in love with a man who was going on national TV with his wife -- and lying." The interview comes ahead of the release of Hunter's memoir, What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me.

Below, a look at intriguing revelations from what Hunter had to say about her relationship with Edwards in a 2010 interview with GQ.
