Robert Durst, the millionaire murder suspect imprisoned in Louisiana, was indicted Wednesday by an Orleans Parish grand jury on a pair of gun charges.
Durst, 71, was initially arrested March 14 in New Orleans on a warrant issued by the Los Angeles Police Department on charges that he murdered a California woman. The new indictment charges -- illegal possession of a firearm by a felon and illegal possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled substance -- are based on a loaded gun and marijuana that authorities say they found in the suspect's hotel room during that arrest.
Attorneys for Durst had been attempting to have him extradited to California.
More from the Times-Picayune:
The indictment transfers Durst's case away from Judge Harry Cantrell's magistrate court and cancels a scheduled preliminary hearing that was to resume Thursday to determine whether probable cause existed for Durst's state arrest. The indictment also puts an indefinite hold on Durst's extradition to California, where Los Angeles police are waiting to book the 71-year-old real estate scion with first-degree murder in connection to the December 2000 shooting death of writer Susan Berman.
Durst returned to the public eye in February as the subject of the HBO mini-series “The Jinx." In the final moments of the last episode, Durst, in the bathroom and unaware that his microphone is on, mutters to himself, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, course."
