Two Boulder Police officers turned in their letters of resignation Tuesday following their arrest last week for their involvement in the shooting of a bull elk in Boulder's Mapleton neighborhood.
Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner's office sent out a press release earlier in the day, noting that the department's internal investigation is ongoing.
“The Boulder Police Department does not tolerate this kind of behavior,” said Beckner. “Police officers and other members of this department will be held accountable for their actions and behavior, and we want the community to know how seriously we take this breach of trust.”
Sam Carter, 35, and Brent Curnow, 38, are facing nine charges each that include three felonies for the death of the trophy-class elk.
Carter had been with the Boulder Police Department for five years and Curnow had been with the department for 14 years. Both men were facing termination if they had not resigned.
An arrest affidavit alleged that the two had conspired to kill the elk as early as Dec. 26 through an exchange of text messages.
According to 9News, Officer Sam Carter -- who was on-duty and patrolling near the Mapleton neighborhood at the time -- shot the elk and off-duty Officer Brent Curnow showed up to take away the elk and have it processed for meat.
Carter can also be seen posing with the dead elk in a photo taken by a Boulder resident shortly after it was killed, though neither officer filed a report about the incident.
Carter and Curnow were arrested last Friday and released on a $20,000 bond recognizance.
