Hula hoopers, bicyclists and rollerbladers took to the Embarcadero last weekend to kick off the first Sunday Streets of the year.
The event closed off a 3.3 mile route along the Embarcadero from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants were invited to get moving while taking part in a variety of exhibits including live music and bird dissections (for real).
"It's focused on healthy, physical activity, exploring the neighborhood and spending money in the neighborhood," San Francisco's Sunday Streets Director Susan King told the San Francisco Chronicle.

King estimated 20,000 pedestrians took part in the festivities. The next three Sunday Streets events will take place in the Mission, the Bayview Dogpatch neighborhoods and along the Great Highway.
Gavin Newsom launched the Sunday Streets program in 2008. The event was inspired by a similar festival in Bogota which keeps cars off the roads on Sundays. San Francisco, New York and Portland were the first three U.S. cities to implement the program.
Since its launch, Sunday Streets has spread to Berkeley, Oakland, Fairfax and beyond.
