As has been previously noted, it ain't easy being Muni.

SFMTA often takes a lot of flack for stuff like lackluster service and high operating costs, but there are some things that the agency does well--and some of those things have gotten San Francisco recognized as a worldwide leader in green transportation.

This week, New York-based non-profit Institute for Transportation & Development Policy bestowed upon San Francisco the 2011 Sustainable Transport Award for serving as a global leader in innovative polices on issues ranging from parking to bike lanes.

San Francisco shared this year's award with Medellin, Columbia and runners-up Cape Town, South Africa and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"These cities are setting the example of working on various fronts--giving people opportunities through high quality transport options," said Walter Hook, chief executive officer of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy in a statement on the organization's website.

"San Francisco is taking on problems all cities face, such as congestion and the need for clean transportation and open space, and finding innovative solutions that are being modeled throughout the country," said San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, touting the city's recent green transportation efforts.
