A school bus carrying two elementary school children crashed into a house in Miami on Wednesday afternoon when the driver tried to avoid an SUV that ran a stop sign.

Miraculously, neither the driver nor the children from Edison Park Elementary School were injured in the incident, which left the school bus dramatically wedged diagonally in the home at Northwest 47th Street and 19th Avenue.

"I stepped foot in the kitchen and the bus just hit the house," Dominique McDuffie told WSVN after the bus plowed through her bedroom. "I just turned around, I'm screaming, I'm like, 'A bus, a bus!'"

Dominique's 87-year-old grandfather Collis McDuffie, who owns the house, was taken to hospital as a precaution. His daughter said his injuries were largely emotional.

"He's in good spirits, just shaken up about what has happened here," Mary Beasley told NBC Miami. "Most of the time, they are in the front of the house, and if they would have been there today I don't think they would be here tonight."

The SUV's driver, 39-year-old Elijah Jerome Smith, fled the scene but was apprehended on Thursday. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury and habitually driving with a suspended license; bond is set at $11,500.

According to WSVN, a witness said Smith was talking on his cell phone just before running the stop sign.
