Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) consistently laments the "out-of-state money" flowing into Wisconsin from progressive groups and labor unions that are working to kick him out of office in a recall election on June 5.
But it's Walker, not the four Democratic candidates, who is pulling in the most money from out of state.
According to the latest fundraising data from the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, compiled by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and MapLight Wisconsin, more than two-thirds of Walker's total individual contributions came from outside of Wisconsin.
The candidate with the next highest percentage of outside contributions was former Dane County executive Kathleen Falk, who is one of the frontrunners in the Democratic primary and has the strong backing of many labor unions. The other Democratic frontrunner, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), had 13 percent of his individual donations come from states other than Wisconsin.
Walker has already brought in a record for a gubernatorial race in Wisconsin and more than the amount brought in by his four Democratic opponents combined.
As The Huffington Post reported on Tuesday, Walker was aided by deep-pocketed donors who are fueling the conservative super PACs that have become major players in national races. He raised $3.57 million from donations over $10,000 in the latest reporting period, which went from Jan. 18 to April 23. Nearly half of that -- $1.67 million -- came from 37 Wisconsin donors, including a $500,000 donation from Diane Hendricks, the billionaire head of the roofing company ABC Supply.
