Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the anti-gun violence group spearheaded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, launched a new ad campaign Friday asking people to call their senators and urge them to approve the compromise background check legislation crafted by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
The ad notes that the Toomey-Manchin bill, which is expected to get a vote next week, "will protect the Second Amendment and help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals." It will air in Washington, D.C., as well as in states represented by senators who are unlikely to support the legislation but, according to the coalition, could influence the debate. Those states include Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Tennessee.
The spot is the second released this week by the group. An earlier ad featured Neil Heslin, the Newton father who lost his son Jesse Lewis in December's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns also announced its own vote-scoring system for gun bills earlier this week, similar to the score-keeping mechanism of many conservative campaign groups, including the National Rifle Association.
