I just watched a Sesame Street video that left me in tears. Tears of joy, that is.

"I Love My Hair" is a delightful new video featuring a little black girl muppet, singing joyously about the beauty of African American hair. Her head bops from side to side in typical muppet fashion as she proclaims her love for her hair and all the versatile ways she can wear it. With a clippy, with a bow, in cornrows or in an afro!

How many little African American girls will sing along with pride to this catchy tune?

How many adult African American women will shed a tear of joy, as I did, remembering a very different world where Saturday mornings were spent fidgeting on a kitchen chair in mortal dread of the pressing comb and black hair, rather than a crowning glory, was a burden to be fried, dyed and laid to the side post-haste.

Hats off to Sesame Street for making the world of little black girls just a little bit more positive.
