"Tahiti is a magical place," Agent Coulson has said countless times since the premiere of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." This week, the show returned from its holiday hiatus and jumped right into exploring what really happened after Coulson "died" in "The Avengers" film.
While he had vague recollections of a wonderful vacation in Tahiti, the truth proved far more terrifying. Suddenly, he remembered unimaginable pain lying on a table. Viewers witnessed something even more horrific as a complex machine was poking and prodding Coulson's exposed brain. Coulson also recalled a familiar face in the memory, and later confronted Dr. Streiten about what happened.
The doctor revealed that Coulson had been dead for days, and that it was Director Nick Fury who demanded whatever they did that brought him back to life. The Tahiti memory was put there to give him back the will to live. Now that Coulson remembers more of the truth, how will it change his personality?
Bustle's Caroline Pate points out that there are still more questions, but "the answers we have now are miles away from where we were just two episodes ago." There is more to be revealed, but it's good to see the show addressing its larger mythology as it kicks off the second half of its season.
