Everyone is going green and Harlem is no exception. New York City's historically black neighborhood has just welcomed its first-ever eco-friendly beauty salon, Simply Hair.
Nestled in the ground floor of The Kalahari building--Harlem's state-of the-art green luxury residences--the salon relies on the LEED-certified structure's use of solar and wind power. According to the press release, Ruth Brooks, hair stylist and owner of Simply Hair, was inspired by the world’s need for more sustainable solutions.
“I originally just wanted to reduce my carbon imprint and, after some research, realized that there were enough organic, botanical, and non-toxic products to open a green beauty salon to service my very culturally diverse clientele,” said Ruth Brooks, elite hair stylist and owner of Simply Hair, in the release.
Brooks is well equipped to take on this new venture, she has over 15 years in the business including stints with Redken, Vidal Sassoon, Style Bar in Sag Harbor and the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman.
Simply Hair's services are anchored in the mission of freeing your hair and nails from chemical dependency. With that said, natural hair maintenance services are on the menu but that doesn't mean that those seeking straight tresses, weaves and dye jobs aren't welcome. Brooks employs "a combination of unique techniques and botanical products," including ammonia-free hair color, to achieve hairstyles that usually require harsh chemicals. And when it comes to manicures and pedicures, the salon is stocked with Zoya nail polish, which are free of all the bad stuff.
Isn't it great to see businesses taking the earth and our personal health into consideration? Hopefully Simply Hair will inspire more companies in Harlem--and around the country to follow suit.
