When officials in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya received a call about an injured lioness, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust dispatched its specialized Sky Vets -- an initiative that sends veterinarians from Nairobi to wildlife incidents around Kenya -- to the scene. Once there, the team darted the injured lioness, and cleaned and sutured her wound during a nearly two-hour surgery. Fortunately, the lioness was able to heal and reunite with her pride.
Lion prides are dominated by females and their cubs, and the females do most of the hunting, according to Defenders of Wildlife. Threatened by prey depletion, climate change and human expansion, African lions are listed as "vulnerable" under the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species.
