Smashing Pumpkins, 'Rhinoceros Version 2'

Smashing Pumpkins Rare Track

"A marriage made in hell" is what Billy Corgan calls this alternate take of the 1991 Smashing Pumpkins track, "Rhinoceros."

The latest offering from the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club gives fans a version of the song that includes a piano solo instead of a guitar solo. The new solo is a raucous electric timeout in the middle of the song that sounds like it was lifted from some forgotten tune from the late 1970s.

"This particular jam has a notable history," Corgan says in the video that accompanies the song. During the recording of what would eventually become their first 7 track release, the band laid down two versions of the song.

"In one version, which we, the band considered the inferior version in hindsight, it has the standard ripping guitar solo," he says. "But on the other version, which actually in my eyes is the superior version, in classic Smashing Pumpkins humor, we thought it would be really funny to get Mark the engineer to play a keyboard solo, and we didn't actually have a real keyboard so he used some kind of shitty keyboard."
