Smithsonian Innoskate 2013 Will Feature Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen And Other Skateboarding Legends

Our teenage (former) selves are unbelievably excited.

Tony Hawk, one of the most influential skateboarders of all time, will pay a visit to D.C. on Saturday, taking part in Innoskate, a Smithsonian program that focuses on the history and culture of skateboarding.

Hawk will be donating his first skateboard to the Museum of American History, which, along with other skateboarding memorabilia being donated, will practically double the current skateboard collection at the museum.

Event organizer Jeffrey Brodie, deputy director of the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center, says the donation goes right along with the center's effort to encourage young people to be creative.

"There's really no better way to dramatize that than to show them a community like skate culture, made up largely of young people, who are being creative and innovative in what they do and say, 'look, these people are inventors and innovators,' and it becomes really accessible," he told The Huffington Post.

At Saturday's program, Hawk will be speaking on a panel with fellow skateboarding pioneer Rodney Mullen. The pair will be a part of a 1 p.m. panel discussing the inventive process behind tricks.

We second the Washington Post's hope that Hawk and Mullen will break out some of their own finest tricks on the mini ramp outside the museum’s Mall entrance.
