Speak Miami is an uncurated open mic in Wynwood that combines spoken word, music, comedy, live painting, and poetry. As the night develops, it evolves into a curated exhibit of the same verticals, but with more professional next-level talent.

The event usually occurs on the last Friday of the month in Wynwood, at the Black Box, but lately they are traveling around the county performing pop-up shows.

This shit is the bomb. It's without a doubt one of the hottest, most talented events in our dopest neighborhood. Turned up and turned out. I went with low expectations and immediately recognized the testimony: Miami's best urban, eclectic street culture.

There must've been around 300 people in attendance. Standing room only on a balmy August off-season night. Cost $10 to enter but worth the price of admission.

Speak started in South Miami 10 years ago and has only been in Wynwood for six months and they've already outgrown their venue. Fire. 🔥100.

This event fills a major void in Miami: an event and space that showcases legitimate and emerging talent a la the Apollo Theater a la Def Poetry Jams a la nothing -- they got their own thing going on. Still it feels like the nineties but different.

If you're looking for something to do in Miami on the last Friday and you want to experience our beautiful bleeping city like local, go to Speak.

Check them out on their Facebook page.
