Spike Lee In Talks To Direct 'Porgy And Bess' Film

Which Broadway Play Is Spike Interested In Filming?

Aside from making his recent Broadway directorial debut in Mike Tyson’s one-man show, “Undisputed Truth,” Spike Lee now has his eyes set on getting involved with another theater production.

During an interview with IndieWire.com, Lee said that he has been in discussion with the Gershwin and Heyward Estates about filming a motion picture version of “Porgy and Bess.”

“I want to make it, but I'm in long discussions with both estates,” he told the site, adding that, “There have been musical elements in my films, but I've been wanting to do a straight up musical for many, many years.”

Lee said that trying to attain the legal rights for the Tony Award-winning revival was “very tricky.” He also expressed interest in adapting his classic 1989 film “Do The Right Thing” into a musical during a recent appearance on the Today show.

Aside from trying to fuse Hollywood and the Great White Way, Lee has been busy building buzz around his latest film, “Red Hook Summer,” which is currently playing in New York City with plans of rolling out to theaters nationwide later this month.
