WHY:

View more than 100 original works by celebrated illustrator, author, and designer Maira Kalman (b. 1949 Tel Aviv) in this first major museum survey of her whimsical yet probing art. Renowned for the many iconic covers and drawings she has created for The New Yorker, more than a dozen books for children and adults, and her popular illustrated columns for The New York Times online, Kalman renders her singular vision of the world from a deeply personal viewpoint, illuminating contemporary life with a profound sense of joy, spontaneity, and humor. The exhibition includes a selection of original works on paper spanning thirty years of illustration, as well as less widely known photography, embroidery, textiles, and video footage of performance art by Kalman. To provide context for this array of work, Kalman has created a special installation, furnishing the gallery with chairs, ladders, and "many tables of many things" drawn from her own collections.
