There's no correlation between the size of your bank account and the size of your heart.
A video originally posted on July 28 by Facebook group Spread the Message reminded us of just that, exposing a stark contrast between some haves and have-nots in Santa Monica, California.
In the video, a man asks unsuspecting strangers in a food court if they could spare some of their meal, and every one of them rejects the request. He then asks a homeless man in a public space the same question, and gets a much more compassionate response.
Kameron Pollock, one of the four friends who created the video, said on Facebook that his group was inspired by a similar video created by YouTube prankster Sam Pepper showing a homeless man selflessly sharing a pizza -- another experiment that proved sometimes the least well-off are the most willing to help.
The video, which has garnered hundreds of thousands of shares on Facebook, highlights the critical issue of homelessness in California. On a single night in January 2013, California accounted for 22 percent of all homeless people living in the U.S., according to the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress.
The video spurred discussion on the topic and inspired many, like Facebook user Scottie Stratton, to take action against the social injustice.
"I would love to do something like this in my community," Stratton commented on Facebook. "Hunger is a very large problem all over now and we need to know it affects the very soul of our existence ... We can't sit back and judge others [when] we need to step in and help."
