'Star Trek' Ring: Etsy Shop, VaLa Jewellery, Sells Trekkie Engagement Ring

If you're planning on settling down with a diehard "Star Trek" fan, why not propose in true Trekkie fashion?

Etsy shop owner Valerie Lazutina has designed an engagement ring modeled after the famous Starfleet insignia.

Instead of a band with a typical bezel, pave or prong setting with a stone, the Trekkie ring features the recognizable fictional emblem used throughout the "Star Trek" series.

The ring, which is available in either sterling silver, 14K white gold or yellow gold via VaLa Jewellery, is studded with a 3mm round brilliant white sapphire. Why not a diamond? According to CBC News, sapphires are commonplace gemstones in the fictional series, which makes a white sapphire much more fitting than a diamond. (With a starting price of $500, not only does a sapphire better suit the Trekkie theme, but lack of diamond also makes the ring fairly affordable compared to others on the market.)

Lazutina told HuffPost Weddings on Monday that she first designed the ring in March for a client who had contacted her about making a Star Trek-inspired engagement ring for his girlfriend.

"He wanted to propose to her at the Sci-fi Convention in Colorado in front of Jonathan Frakes [who played Commander William T. Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation"]," said Lazutina in an e-mail. "He sent me some photos with the initial design ideas that he had. From that point on we worked together and came up with this final 'Star Trek' insignia engagement ring."

Since then, Lazutina has had several other e-mails from potential customers, including a client from Australia who asked her if it was possible to overnight the ring in time for his daughter's 21st birthday.

So does that mean other Trekkie items might come about in the future? Lazutina told HuffPost Weddings, "I am completely open to the client's ideas and I work with these ideas to make the ring that is just as special as the couple to be engaged."
