There are only a few rules in the school of Stevie Nicks: mandatory oversized scarves, a minimum of three twirls per number and owning every single moment on stage.
The queen of rock 'n' roll taught the "School of Rock" kids a lesson or two, when she joined the Broadway cast on stage after Tuesday night's show. Nicks chose to perform the Fleetwood Mac hit "Rhiannon" alongside the talented youngsters currently starring in the stage adaptation of the popular 2003 Jack Black film.
"To be in the presence of these kids that are so amazing that honestly sometimes I close my eyes and I’m not sure that it’s not Fleetwood Mac,” she told the adoring audience after the song. “It’s very trippy. They are so good.”
After her performance, Nicks took a moment to remind the audience of an important cause: Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, an organization that provides support financially and otherwise for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The pairing of musical and the musician, however, isn't particularly surprising, considering Nicks has a big role in the "School of Rock" script. The uptight principal, played by Joan Cusack in the film, is a closet rock 'n' roll fan who worships Stevie Nicks. Nicks' songs are also featured in both the Broadway production and the movie.
"I don’t feel like I’m a songwriter that just writes for old people or just writes for young people," Nicks said, according to Page Six. "I don’t think we’re stuck in a time machine that they only have to write stuff for people their age, and I only have to write stuff for people my age. Obviously, that’s not true because look at what we just did."
