The Stonewall riots occurred in 1969, but the first trailer for Roland Emmerich's new film begins with the words of President Obama: "Our nation was founded on a bedrock principle: that we are all created equal." The hunt for equality will give Emmerich the opportunity to spotlight something other than the explosions ("Independence Day," "White House Down") and natural disasters ("The Day After Tomorrow") that we expect from his movies. Starring Jeremy Irvine, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ron Perlman, the drama chronicles the lead-up to the liberation march that resulted in police brutality and launched the modern LGBT rights movement as we know it.

"Stonewall" will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, with a theatrical release slated for Sept. 25.
