For a bag that really packs a punch, check out these woven, printed cross-body bags handmade by the indigenous Wayuú women and distributed by Wayuú Taya Foundation. The Wayuú—a Latin American group that live in the Guajira region between Venezuela and Colombia—have a rich culture that's being threatened with urban migration. These bags are a special cultural symbol for the matrilineal community, with Wayuú mythology represented in the patterns and colors of each handmade purse. It takes one Guajira woman 20 eight-hour days to complete a single purse, which explains the $120 price-tag, but proceeds go back to fund child care, hygiene programs, nutritional attention, education, and health service. In the midst of the "ethnic" trend in fashion, perhaps it's a sound idea to invest in the culture from where the trend was inspired from before you turn towards a design house somewhere. Pick up a bag for yourself here.
