Building A Sustainable Holiday Meal Is As Easy As Buying Local (VIDEO)

How To Be Sure Your Holiday Feast Is Good For The Environment, Too

The holidays are a time to feast, but how can we enjoy all the delicious dishes this time of year has to offer without feeling guilty about our impact on the environment?

HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri spoke with a panel of chefs about building the a sustainable yet savory holiday meal.

Gwen Schantz, COO of the Brooklyn Rooftop Grange, said it's important to think about where the ingredients your Christmas meal are coming from because of the carbon dioxide emissions and fuel costs associated with shipping food from other parts of the country.

But lucky for holiday foodies, most of the classic components of a Christmas meal are easily accessible on the local level, Schantz said.

"Turkeys, hams, cranberry jelly, potatoes -- these are all things you can find locally throughout the country, locally produced, organically produced," she said. "They're totally seasonal this time of year."
