A recording that a student made of her teacher's profanity-laced tirade has gone viral.
The cell phone recording was made by a student of an unidentified English teacher on Sept. 26 at the Humanities and Art Academy at Narbonne High in Los Angeles, the Daily Breeze reported. The Los Angeles Unified School District confirmed that the woman is a teacher in the district.
In the recording, the high school teacher says, "Don’t f*ck with that. I'm tired of trying to educate you, and you guys resist every step of the f*cking way. Get the f*ck out of here."
The incident occurred when the English teacher was leading a discussion on the difference between race and ethnicity. She said that the term "African American" isn't really accurate, noting that she doesn't refer to herself as "Italian-American." One student kept telling the teacher she was wrong. That student made the recording and then brought it to another teacher who doesn’t get along with the English teacher. That teacher distributed the recording.
The English teacher has now been put on leave while administrators investigate the incident, according to reports Wednesday. The district told The Daily Breeze that, in similar situations, teachers have been issued a "notice of unsatisfactory act."
The teacher apologized for her behavior, citing stress linked to medical issues and a tense atmosphere at work, the Daily Breeze reported. She said she also felt betrayed by her student and fellow teachers, “This girl took my moment of weakness and used it against me. And then the teacher egged [the student] on to send it to her, and then they disseminated it. It’s just cruel."
She mentioned that cell phones are banned in LAUSD classrooms, raising an ongoing concern by teachers of being recorded by students, KTLA reports.
Students at the school Wednesday defended the teacher.
“It is wrong to be cussing, at students especially, but a lot of kids here aggravate the teachers,” student Aaron Taylor said to KTLA. “She’s a good teacher. Everybody makes mistakes and she’s only human.”
Student Summer Washington chimed in similarly to KTLA, “Everybody forgave her. That’s our favorite teacher.”
