Ted Lieu Defeats Elan Carr In California House Race

Democrat Ted Lieu has won the race for outgoing Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-Calif.) seat, defeating Republican opponent Elan Carr.

Lieu, a state senator, narrowly finished ahead of fellow Democrat Wendy Greuel in June's open primary. Carr, a gang prosecutor, finished first in that contest.

Waxman, known on Capitol Hill as a prolific legislator, announced in January he would leave Congress after 40 years of service. His departure led 16 candidates to vie for the seat, making the race one of this cycle's most expensive.

The Democratic-leaning district encompasses some of the state's wealthiest communities, including Beverly Hills, Malibu and Bel-Air.
