The state typically has more conservative leanings, though in 1992 and 1996 it cast its electoral votes for Bill Clinton. Al Gore's nomination for vice president likely helped propel Clinton to victory, as Gore was previously a senator for the Volunteer State. With the exception of Democratic hold-outs near Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee was a strong Republican state in 2008, with GOP presidential candidate John McCain taking over 60 percent of the vote.
