The Baltimore Ravens' Terrell Suggs positioned himself in direct opposition to the media firestorm surrounding his Super Bowl rivals by proclaiming that he and his teammates would welcome an openly gay player.
Telling NBC Sports that he would "absolutely not" have a problem with a gay teammate, the Ravens outside linebacker noted, "We don't care. Our biggest thing in the locker room is to just have fun and stay loose."
Suggs then added, "On this team, with so many different personalities, we just accept people for who they are and we don’t really care too much about a player’s sexuality ... You know who you are, and we accept you for it.”
Of course, Suggs' teammate is Brendon Ayanbadejo, who has not only been an outspoken advocate for same-sex marriage, but has also vowed to use the Super Bowl XLVII as a platform to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.
The Ravens linebacker has maintained a diplomatic stance on the controversy surrounding Chris Culliver, the San Francisco 49ers cornerback who declared that he "don't do the gay guys, man" and that his team "don't got no gay people" in an interview with Artie Lange.
“Culliver is going to turn this into a positive thing," he is quoted by the Daily News as saying. "I couldn’t really say anything negative to the young man. It’s just one of those things you have to live and you have to learn. In the words of Martin Luther King, ‘You can’t fight hate with hate. You have to fight hate with love.’
