Calling "The Awesomes" a web series would be like referring to "Orange is the New Black" as such. Make no mistake, the new Hulu show from Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker, the two main creative forces behind the upcoming "Late Night with Seth Meyers," could easily fit on broadcast or cable TV, but takes full advantage of the opportunities provided by web streaming services.

The first two 22-minute episodes were released today, and tell the origin story of the superhero clan The Awesomes, who are forced to reform from the ground up after the departure of their leader inspires all the other members to go their separate ways. Prock (Meyers), the former leader's son and only holdover, brings together a team of leftover superheroes to round out the team.

In addition to being the co-head writer on "SNL" and the upcoming host of "Late Night," Meyers is an avowed comic book fan. The Weekend Update host told Indiewire that making an animated, comedic cartoon is the best medium for this type of story. "I still feel like the best way to tell a superhero story is animated -- or certainly if you come from comic books, it feels that way."

Shoemaker, a producer on "SNL" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," told the AP that "The Awesomes" remains a priority for the pair despite their busy schedule with the upcoming talk show, which will premiere in February. "When we're done talking about 'Late Night,' we talk about 'The Awesomes' and vice versa."

The show features the voices of many present and former "SNL" comrades, including Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Taran Killam and Rachel Dratch.
