'The Following': Ryan Learns Just How Far Carroll's Reach Is

Until this week's episode, Ryan and the team had only been aware of a few of Carroll's followers. This week, they learned just how far his reach was during the bloody shootout at the farmhouse on "The Following." With Ryan captured, the trio had their backs against the wall. Even they didn't know how deep Carroll's influence was.

Emma took a phone call and abruptly decided to take Carroll's son and abandon Jacob and Paul to their fate in the house with Ryan. By this point, the farmhouse was surrounded by authorities. But Carroll's followers had infiltrated these as well, meaning they could create openings as necessary to allow Emma and the boy to escape. A local officer did that by shooting Weston.

But then, back in the house, just as it seemed Paul and Jacob would be taken in, they discovered that Carroll's followers had infiltrated this law enforcement agency as well. So everyone got to escape, though not without some blood shed, thanks to Ryan and some quick stabbing motions. Even the jogger girl from the basement was set free.

But this was just the end of one story. As Carroll told his tortured lawyer, it was time for the next story to begin. Find out what it is by tuning in to "The Following" on Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
