The Inspirational Woman Project: Kanchan Singh

The Inspirational Woman Project believes that every woman is inspirational. It’s our mission to tell their stories.

Kanchan Singh is a 26-year-old animal lover and entrepreneur. In 2015, Kanchan founded Crumbs & Whiskers, Washington DC's first cat cafe, to improve the lives of shelter cats and give animal lovers in the city a fun and inspiring place to get their cuddle fix. One year later, Kanchan opened her second location in Los Angeles. Kanchan's favorite things in the world are animals, music, travel, books, and yoga.

Why are you inspirational?

{Singh} Oh my gosh, am I?! I guess my friends say they admire how fearless I am. Once I decide to do something, I will do it even if that decision scares me out of my mind. I’m the girl who jumps and then screams the whole way down… and also lands very ungracefully with lots of bruises and scratches. But then jumps again.

What is your favorite thing about being a woman?

{Singh} Three favorite things: short shorts, high heels, and lipstick. Yeah, I'm that girl.

What gets you out of bed every morning?

{Singh} Life! It's magical that I'm a 26 year old girl who is healthy, intelligent, attractive, and financially independent. (Did someone say modesty is a virtue?) But seriously... what more could you ask for?! I feel so incredibly lucky to be waking up every single day in a world where I'm healthy, have a strong group of friends, can travel anywhere I want to, and work on a business I'm really passionate about with my brother. I love life! Honestly, I have a way harder time getting into bed than getting out of bed.

Why Los Angeles?

{Singh} Because of market opportunity - it’s just the perfect product-market fit. When I looked on Google Trends, I saw that LA had one of the highest search volumes for a cat cafe in the US, but they didn’t actually have any cat cafes! I also knew just from having been to LA a few times that Crumbs & Whiskers would be perfect for LA - it’s trendy, unique, and has a social mission. That's SO Los Angeles. So overall, it was a personality fit and the consumer demand was clearly there.

What are you celebrating right now?

{Singh} The launch of Crumbs & Whiskers LA!
