"The Kennedys," the controversial miniseries starring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear that bounced from History Channel to ReelzChannel, could be getting a sequel. According to Deadline.com, Reelz and Canadian producer Muse Entertainment are looking at an eight-episode follow-up based on "After Camelot," the 2012 book by J. Randy Taraborrelli.
The sequel would pick up where the 2011 miniseries ended: the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. The book follows what happened to the Kennedys following the deaths of the family's two murdered sons. Deadline.com reports no writer is attached to the project yet and original "Kennedys" producers Joel Surnow and Asylum Entertainment are not involved with the sequel.
"The Kennedys" was set to air on the History Channel in 2011, but the network announced it was dropping the project amid criticism that it was not historically accurate.
"Upon completion of the production of 'The Kennedys,' History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries," a rep for the network said in a statement in January 2011. "After viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded that although the film is produced and acted with the highest quality auspices, the dramatic license the series takes is not suitable for the History brand."
Rumors swirled about where the project would end up, with networks like FX, Starz and Showtime reportedly in the running to scoop up the series. Eventually it landed on ReelzChannel and debuted in April 2011. The miniseries broke ratings records for Reelz -- depending on who you ask the premiere had 1.3 million viewers or 1.9 million -- and netted Barry Pepper an Emmy award for his portrayal of Robert F. Kennedy.
