The Mental Game Behind a Successful Weight Loss Journey

What if I told you that it takes a hell of a lot more than mere motivation to come out on top on your weight loss journey?

It’s a cloudy, cool day here on Long Island, and I write this to you from my parents’ home. Every Tuesday and Friday, I visit my hometown of Port Washington, and work with my grandmother on rehab from hip replacement surgery last summer, and my dad on improving his strength, tone and overall cardiovascular health.

Yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of doing my second podcast with Meredith Shirk, founder of Svelte Training. Meredith is one of the few bright lights in the health and fitness world. We share many of the same ideas about fitness, health and nutrition, and our approaches with our clients are set to yield one result: SUSTAINABILITY!

In order for the weight loss you experience on your journey to be sustainable, three things need to be accepted o your end in order to achieve success:

1) Don’t put yourself in a box.

For many people, they’ll come across a dietary strategy, and will label themselves as such. So, for example, people on the Paleo Diet subscribe as Paleo Guys and Gals, while people on a Ketogenic Diet will say they’re a Keto Guy or Gal.

On my personal 100 lb. weight loss journey, I stumbled across the Paleo Diet during my two year plateau. This dietary strategy FINALLY got the scale moving again in the right direction, but I didn’t consider myself a Paleo guy.

As the weight began to come off once again, I continued to do my due diligence. I came across books like Wheat Belly, by William Davis MD, who I actually recently did a great podcast with. To check that out, go here: https://soundcloud.com/weightlossbypete/weight-loss-by-pete-podcast-64

Wheat Belly led to Grain Brain by David Perlmutter MD, which led to The Fat Switch by Robert J. Johnson MD… You get the idea!

Each book and each expert presented great data and research to support their claims — Many of which were contradictory to popular dietary advice! However, since these physicians did their homework, had case studies and relevant science to back their claims up, their stuff checked out, and I began to add simple tweaks that I learned from them to my nutrition along the way.

The same holds true for you! Based on food allergies, dietary restrictions, etc., you may not eat the same way that I do — And that’s OK! A few simple tweaks is all you need to make that HUGE difference in both your health and your weight loss efforts.

2) STOP TRACKING CALORIES, POINTS OR MACROS!

While I do have a few of my clients tracking their macros because they have short-term goals they’d like to accomplish, this is NOT, I repeat, NOT, a sound nutritional strategy.

What is a sound nutritional strategy? Glad you asked!

A sound nutritional strategy is one you can stick to for the rest of your life.

Let’s be honest — Are you going to pull out a journal or your phone every time you’re thinking about eating to track your calories, points or macros for the rest of your life? Imagine doing that at a social event, or on vacation… Yeah, didn’t think you would…

3) Find something that works and BE CONSISTENT with it!

Like I’ve mentioned in previous messages, when I work with my clients, I have them eat as normal and track their food for the first week. I see what good they already do nutritionally, and also the bad. I see what types of food they like, and what types of food they seem not to like.

Armed with this information, I’m able to design a personalized Dietary Analysis, which shows them the good, the bad, and what simple tweaks can be made to insure that they can not only lose weight in a healthy way, but can do so in a SUSTAINABLE way!

It’s all about sustainability if you want to stop yo-yoing! There are so many fad diets out there that will get you to lose a lot of weight really fast, but there aren’t many nutrition programs that set you up for success — Both in the short, and in the long-term! The way you eat when you’re losing weight has to incorporate simple, sustainable dietary changes that you can impart into your lifestyle for the rest of your days.
