These Cats Sleep Like Humans, And They Get More Rest Than You

They're pretty much expert nappers.

Cat owners know their felines like to sleep, but if they knew just how much, they'd be jealous.

The typical kitty spends more than 60 percent of the day asleep. Some spend as much as 80 percent -- that's more than 19 hours a day -- curled up on your couch, while you're stressing out at work and complaining about all the things you don't have time to do.

Even if you clock the seven to nine hours of slumber recommended for adults (which more than one-third of U.S. adults do not get), that still only puts you at about half the amount your feline clocks.

Experts say cats are basically hard-wired nappers. While pet felines acclimate to their human companions' slumber patterns, they are naturally crepuscular animals. That means they're naturally most active at night and catch their Zs during the day, usually through short and long naps.

While research shows that shifted sleep patterns can wreak havoc on human health, cats may be on to something with their affinity to naps. Studies show naps (done right!) can boost creativity, mood and productivity.

Well-done, kitty.
