Eastern Market Attack Arrests: 3 Men In Custody In Thomas Maslin Beating On Capitol Hill

Arrests Made In BRUTAL Capitol Hill Beating

WASHINGTON -- Residents on Capitol Hill are breathing a sigh of relief after the Metropolitan Police Department announced arrests in the brutal Aug. 18 robbery and beating of a man on North Carolina Avenue SE near Eastern Market that put the neighborhood on edge.

On Wednesday night, D.C. police said they arrested three men in connection with the attack on 29-year-old Thomas Maslin, who was discovered on a neighborhood front porch severely beaten nearly eight hours after the overnight attack.

Maslin had left the Tune Inn at Fourth Street and Pennsylvania in Southeast about 12:30 a.m. to walk home. At 12:57 a.m., someone attempted to use his credit card at the Exxon station in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

About 3:30 a.m., another person was robbed but not seriously hurt, police said Wednesday evening. Investigators linked that robbery to the attack on Maslin, News4's Shomari Stone reported.

Maslin suffered severe brain injuries and has undergone numerous surgeries in the weeks since the attack. Although he had made some progress in his rehabilitation, Maslin's wife Abigail said that recovery could take years. "His survival itself is a miracle," she told The Washington Post.

MPD Chief Cathy Lanier said, according to WUSA-TV/9News: "I can not say enough about how heartbreaking it is to see that a piece of property or a cell phone will cause someone the type of injury and grief that these three individuals have caused the Maslin family, and they will live with for the rest of their lives," Lanier said.

Police said Wednesday night that they had actually arrested the three suspects -- Tommy Tyrone Branch, 21, of Fort Washington, Md.; Michael Moore, 18, of Landover, Md.; and an unnamed juvenile -- in the hours following the attack on Maslin. MPD had arrested the trio following another robbery on 18th Street NW. But it took until this week to connect the three men to the Capitol Hill attack.
