As a massive winter storm -- named "Q" by the Weather Channel -- trudges eastward across the Great Plains, residents of Kansas, Missouri and other affected states reported incidences of thundersnow.
The Associated Press defines the meteorological occurrence as "heavy snowfall accompanied by occasional thunder."
In the video (above), which was posted on Thursday by St. Louis, Mo., news station KSDK, lightning can be observed flashing behind the thick flurries.
In Wichita, Kan., officials told NBC local affiliate KSN that thundersnow might be to blame for a house fire in Wichita on Thursday.
Snow and ice are falling heavily on a vast area of the central United States, with overnight accumulations topping 14 inches in parts of Kansas. According to AccuWeather, more than 600 lightning strikes were reported in western Oklahoma and Texas in one hour, shortly after midnight Thursday, Central time, along with thundersnow and "thundersleet."
The winter storm, which has brought blizzard conditions to parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri, is expected to continue eastward through Friday, possibly bringing snowy and hazardous icy conditions as far East as the Ohio Valley.
